Steps In Between

Want-To-Be-Writer

IMG_8930I am not an author – yet.

Who decides? A publishing company? A degree in literature? My readers? I used to call myself a “want-to-be-writer” because I felt the pangs of becoming an author heavy in my chest. Yet, from the mouths of authors themselves, I have been told, “If you write, you are a writer.” But, are you a chef because you have cooked for your friends? Are you a nurse because you have bandaged the wounds of injured children in the backyard? For that matter, are you a saint because for more than five years you have witnessed daily miracles in your life, like making it through the day in one piece while trying to write that soul-wrenching novel, manage your day job with grace (even when you’re habitually exhausted), and deplete yourself selflessly for your family?

No. There are a few steps in between.

That’s what this blog is about. The steps in between. The steps I am intentionally taking to improve myself and refine my writing skills, one breath at a time. To keep inspiration kindled, to breathe out the words seeking haven inside my lungs. To find accountability along this journey of becoming an author.

Will you join me?

If you have ever thought about writing, considered it for even a moment, or imagined yourself writing behind closed eyes, then face it my new-found friends; you are writers. It is time for all of us to hone our craft, to find our voices, and to take those first steps and breathe.

Words like breath, write like breathing. I would love to claim this idea, because it’s exactly how I feel. But when I googled it, Julia Cameron has already said it, “Writing is like breathing. It’s possible to learn to do it well, but the point is to do it no matter what.” She’s written a book called, The Artist’s Way. I haven’t read it yet, but it’s on my list. I want to learn everything I can about writing, and then even more. How about you?

This blog is an invitation to every kind of writer (published and unpublished), in any genre. Honestly, I am speaking to all kinds of artists. You are welcome here… my only request is to keep it positive and clean. We all share the same air.

I look forward to making regular posts, and to interacting with other writers/artists out there. Bear with me in the first stages of development. Although blogging is new for me, I am up for the challenge, and hope to find your support as a strength.

Please share any hopes or aspirations you have as a writer/artist in the comments below. If you’re not a writer or artist, feel free to cheer us on. The world needs more encouragers.

  1. I hope, in our own way, that we all will take those steps between. For we must all bond together with a creative spirit in order for this world to rise above the inequities that plague us. Thanks for taking the steps and inviting us along 🙂

  3. I’m also just starting my journey toward becoming a professional writer. I mostly want to write fiction, but I’ve thought of starting a blog kind of like this, where I could chronicle my journey toward (hopefully) becoming a freelance writer. Keep up the good work. It’s great to know there are others out there in the same place as me.

  4. I am at the beginning of my writing journey too but writing is becoming addictive. If I am not writing the words down (my word count goes up very slowly) my mind is constantly thinking, plotting and developing characters.
    Enjoy your adventure 🙂
