Steps In Between

Recycled Resolutions

How many of you have already abandoned your New Year’s Resolutions? Hey—don’t worry! Here’s a new idea! Focus instead on recycled goals from previous years. If recycling is good enough for the environment, then it’s good enough for me!

Sometimes setting brand new goals every winter can cause stress and anxiety. What if they turn out badly? What if they don’t? By spring, most of us have either dropped, changed, or forgotten about the goals set in the new year. According to a survey with www.cbsnews.com, “Just under 1 in 10 people (8%) said their resolutions lasted a month.” I knew that number would be low, but 8% is startlingly scraping the bottom!

I decided to try something new this year. Instead of starting anew, what if I reactivated all the same wonderful goals I’d set for myself in the previous years? Every one of those goals still matters to me, and although some would surely have been similar if rewritten as new resolutions, the safety in sitting with a goal I was already comfortable with felt better. In fact, it feels much more manageable.

Now I have fewer jitters as I attack my goals from last year! I am still all about publishing my new book ideas, still about growing as a creator, and still about finding balance in my writing and teaching life. But having already made a little headway last year before overwhelm shut me down, I was able to pick up exactly where I left off, and now my goals feel even stronger and more reachable.

It’s still January, so I suppose I’m still within that possible 8% of giving up, but I don’t think so. I’m going to hold onto my recycled ideas like my world depends on it…because maybe it does! Just like the environment counts on reducing, reusing, and recycling to thrive, I’m eagerly awaiting my own revival in the months to come!

A few of my recycled goals:

  • Publish my sequel
  • Explore kidlit publishing
  • Finish my YA Fantasy, Life Song (once and for all)
  • Finish a few new projects (I can’t wait to share these soon)
  • Balance my life as a teacher and writer
  • Write faster!
  • Grow my authorship and newsletter

Best of luck to all of you in this new 2025 year! As always, happy writing!
